KIDNEY HEALTH

Understanding Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Your kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located in your lower back. They are your body's vital filtration system, cleaning wastes and extra fluids from your blood to keep you healthy.

The Journey of CKD

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) means your kidneys are damaged and can't filter blood the way they should. The disease is called "chronic" because the damage happens slowly over a long period.

The 5 Stages of Kidney Disease

1
Kidney Damage (Normal function)

eGFR > 90. Kidneys have mild damage but still function well.

2
Mild Loss of Function

eGFR 60-89. Very few to no symptoms are present at this stage.

3
Moderate to Severe Loss

eGFR 30-59. Wastes may begin accumulating in the blood.

4
Severe Loss of Function

eGFR 15-29. Time to start preparing for dialysis or a transplant.

5
Kidney Failure (ESRD)

eGFR < 15. Dialysis is now strictly required to sustain life.

Symptoms to Watch For

Nausea & Vomiting
Severe Fatigue
Swollen Feet
Difficulty Sleeping
Shortness of Breath
Persistent Itching

Hemodialysis Machine
TREATMENT PROCESS

How Hemodialysis Works

Hemodialysis is a treatment that acts as a replacement for your own kidneys. It uses an advanced machine and a special filter called an artificial kidney (dialyzer) to clean your blood.

The Dialysis Cycle visualised

1. Blood Leaves

Blood is drawn safely from your arm access point carrying accumulated wastes.

2. The Filter

The machine pumps blood through a dialyzer. Wastes are washed away by dialysate fluid.

3. Blood Returns

The freshly cleaned and filtered blood is gently returned to your body.

How Long Does It Take?

Most patients require dialysis treatments three times a week. Each session typically lasts about 4 hours. During this time, you can relax, read, sleep, or watch TV while the machine does the work.

Healthy Diet
NUTRITION

Diet & Nutrition for Dialysis

When you begin dialysis, your diet becomes a crucial part of your treatment. Because your kidneys can no longer remove enough waste products, what you eat and drink strongly affects your health and energy levels.

The Colorful Dialysis Diet Visual Guide

Enjoy These Foods
  • High-Quality ProteinFish, poultry, egg whites, and lean meat. Essential for rebuilding muscles.
  • Low-Potassium FruitsApples, berries, grapes, watermelon, and pineapples.
  • Low-Potassium VeggiesCabbage, cauliflower, garlic, onions, and cucumber.
Strictly Limit or Avoid
  • High Sodium (Salt)Processed foods, canned soups, fast food, and salty snacks. Makes you thirsty!
  • High PotassiumBananas, oranges, potatoes, tomatoes, and durian. Can stop your heart.
  • High PhosphorusDairy products (milk/cheese), nuts, dark colas, and chocolate. Causes bone disease.

Water Glass
DAILY HABITS

Mastering Fluid Management

Controlling thirst is often the most difficult challenge for dialysis patients. Because your kidneys aren't producing much urine, any fluid you consume builds up rapidly in your body between treatments, causing severe swelling, high blood pressure, and breathlessness.

Smart & Colorful Ways to Quench Thirst

Suck on Ice Chips

Ice lasts longer in your mouth and tricks your brain into feeling satisfied with far less total liquid than a glass of water.

Rinse & Spit

When your mouth feels overwhelmingly dry, rinse your mouth with ice-cold water or minty mouthwash, then spit it out completely.

Sour Candy or Lemon

Suck on a frozen lemon wedge or sugar-free sour candy. The tartness instantly stimulates your natural saliva production.

The Danger of Excess Fluid Extra fluid stretches your heart like a balloon. Over time, this causes irreversible heart failure. Always measure your cups and stick strictly to your doctor's prescribed daily fluid allowance!

Arm Access
LIFELINE PROTECTION

Vascular Access (Fistula) Care

Your arteriovenous (AV) fistula is your lifeline. It is the surgical connection that allows blood to flow safely to the dialysis machine. Taking excellent care of your access arm is non-negotiable.

DO THESE DAILY
  • Check the "Thrill" Gently touch your fistula daily to feel the buzz or vibration (thrill). If it stops, go to the hospital immediately.
  • Keep it Spotless Wash your access arm with antibacterial soap and warm water every single day.
  • Light Exercise Use a soft rubber squeeze ball to help the fistula mature and keep the vein strong.
STRICTLY AVOID
  • No Blood Pressure Cuffs Never let anyone take your blood pressure or draw blood from your fistula arm.
  • No Heavy Lifting Do not lift heavy objects (like groceries or children) or sleep resting on your access arm.
  • No Tight Items Avoid tight sleeves, watches, or bracelets that can compress and restrict blood flow.

Mental Support
EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING

Mental Health & Support

Dialysis is a marathon, not a sprint. It brings massive changes to your lifestyle, which can easily lead to anxiety, depression, and "dialysis burnout". Caring for your mind is just as vital as caring for your kidneys.

4 Pillars of Coping

Build a Support System

Lean on your family and friends. Don't isolate yourself. Talk openly about how you feel and let them help you.

Keep a Hobby

Dialysis takes roughly 12 hours a week. Use this chair time productively to read, knit, play games, or watch movies.

Talk to Fellow Patients

No one understands your struggles better than the person in the chair next to you. Say hello and make friends!

Seek Professional Help

If you feel overwhelmed with persistent sadness or anxiety, speak to our head nurse to connect with a counselor.

HOLIDAY GUIDE

Traveling with Dialysis

Yes, you can absolutely still go on holidays! Being on dialysis does not mean your life has to stop. It simply requires a little extra careful planning and coordination for "Guest Dialysis" at your travel destination.

Travel Planning Timeline
4 Weeks
Contact Destination Clinic

Find a dialysis centre near your hotel and confirm if they accept guest patients on your exact travel dates.

2 Weeks
Send Medical Records

Ask our head nurse to prepare and officially fax/email your medical history and recent blood test results to them.

1 Week
Final Confirmation

Call the destination clinic again to re-confirm your slot. Pack all your daily medications safely in your hand-carry bag!

Malaysian Food
HEALTHY EATING

Malaysian Recipes & Ingredient Swaps

Malaysian food is famously delicious, but traditional recipes are often dangerously high in sodium (salt, soy sauce, belacan) and potassium (coconut milk). The good news? You don't have to give up your favorite local foods—just tweak the ingredients!

Smart Local Food Swaps

High Potassium
Coconut Milk (Santan)
Kidney Friendly
Low-Fat Milk / Evap Milk
High Sodium
Soy Sauce / MSG (Kicap)
Natural Flavor
Garlic, Ginger & Lemongrass
TOXIC!
Starfruit (Belimbing)
Safe Fruits
Apple / Papaya / Grapes
Fatal Warning

Never consume Starfruit (Belimbing). It contains a neurotoxin that damaged kidneys cannot filter out. Eating it can cause seizures, coma, or death in dialysis patients.
